Blueberries + Self Love

Last week, I was on my road trip back from Fairbanks to Anchorage, and I decided to stop to look for blueberries in Broad Pass. Alaskan blueberries are one of my favorite parts of summer up here, so I knew I had to pause to look for them on the drive.

The first place I stopped yielded only a few berries, but I was encouraged with what I saw. I decided to pull off a few miles down the highway again, and this time I let Luna out and set off with my “All Good Things are Wild + Free” Salmon Sisters mug (because I’d forgotten a bag for gathering).

As I made my way through the willow brush, I walked down a little hill. Luna came bounding after me and ran further down the hill to the lake below. (She loves the water.)

Sure enough, there were loads of plump blueberries! There was mist in the air, and I could see Luna swimming in the lake below me. I pulled my hair back in a quick ponytail, knelt down in the bushes, breathed in the Labrador tea and wet earth, and started picking. Every so often, I’d pop a few tart blueberries into my mouth, and then go back to gathering.

After about 20 minutes, my mug was full, and Luna had bounced around me a few times and run back down to the lake. With a mug full of berries, I sat up and looked around me. Luna was swimming below, there was a warm mist swirling around me, and the mountains nearby were still green and peeking through the clouds.

I had this moment of peace, abundance, and gratitude.

In that moment, I thought: THIS IS MY LIFE. This is my beautiful life.

And I felt so thankful.

When I recall this moment, I notice a few things:

1. I followed my intuition to stop and look for berries – and I’m glad I did.

2. It’s important to pause and appreciate the beautiful moments in your life.

3. Acts of self love can be as simple as stopping on the side of the highway to wander with your dog – and they can lead to so much peace and goodness.

When is the last time you followed your intuition and acted out of self love?
